I think I'll be needing a bigger tree...
(I keep a list of all the cars I'm interested in buying, with reference licence plate numbers so I can easily check how much each would cost to insure. I call up my insurance company, and run comparison website checks, whenever that 'new car, buy a new car, A NEW CAR' impulse pops up.)

Your list of cars you'd like is startlingly similar to mine. The only difference is mine has the panda 100 and a few diesel estates on it in case I decide to be sensible.

Mine is more like RX8, Golf VR6, Merc S320 CDI, BMW 740i, Renault Twingo

I live French. I like the RX8, but I really don't think I could cope with the demands of a rotary—even if I do enjoy the noise and the ridiculous revs. The only car that might make me reconsider is the FD RX-7, on looks alone. I know some people advocate swapping in less demanding engines, but so far as I'm concerned, giving an RX-7 anything that doesn't run on magic triangles is sacrilege.
I'm not much of a German car guy, so I haven't really looked into the others. And the new Twingo's a little too, well, new for me, and I'm waiting on the RS.

Ooooh, the Panda 100HP! Thanks for reminding me—I'd completely forgotten about it. It's going on the list.
My 'sensible' option would probably be a 406 Estate of some description, or perhaps a Mk1 Focus with one of the larger petrols.

RX8 because handling and feel will be similar to my mx-5 (and has 4 seat and less road/wind noise) VR6 for noise, merc because luxury and cheap with diesel, 740 because looks great and 728 is dog slow and twingo because budget 5 door 911.

The VR6 does make quite a noise.

My sensible car would likely be a mondeo st tdci. Theyre cheap now and decently quick.
Also just cycled into uni and passed a minty pre-facelift 106 rallye in blue. If my financial situation was better I'd have left a note asking how much he'd sell it for. I'll get pics if it's still there on my way home.

The S1 Rallye is my favourite 106, and I fucking love the 106. It's the subject of almost all my 106 rally gifs. They go for utterly ridiculous money these days, though.
The Mondeo ST TDCi's a good call. I actually looked into them fairly recently, in response to a question about fun cars that could tow a decent amount. My original pick was the ST220, but it doesn't have an official tow rating.

Yeah an unmolested one will be worth it's weight in gold before long. I've never seen a blue one in person either and I love blue cars (hence me buying one). Hopefully it's there when I head home since I couldnt stop to look.
We had a mondeo diesel in the family and it was excellent and only broke once due to misuse (turbo packed in because my grandad serviced it but forgot to do the air filter for a few years resulting in all sorts of crap getting in and wrecking the seals on it). It still managed to tow a caravan 100 miles with the ruined turbo though. Plus I kinda like the way they look.

They're handsome cars, though I prefer the facelifted 406. Irritatingly - in light of my general 'no saloons' policy - it's one of the few cars that looks better as a saloon than as an estate.

Perhaps not quite as throaty, but there's still a similarity there to my ear.

The 406 is a handsome car for sure, especially in that colour. A saloon would be a pain practicality wise for me though. The Panda is already a struggle for me hauling stuff about and thats completely square so it's like having a little van. If I was getting a big peugeot estate though I's be drawn to the 407 sw. Not sure why.

My somewhat irrational hatred for every Peugeot made between 2004 - the year they stopped building the 106 - and 2013 - the year the RCZ-R came out - makes the 407 a dicey proposition for me. The primary reason why I like Ford is that they kept doing the Peugeot thing - fun ordinary cars - after Peugeot gave up and started churning out stuff like the 206.

I hate the 206 and 307 from that era, but I've ridden in a few 407s and they seem very nice, plus you can get one for next to nothing. Not sure how reliable they are though.

By the way the 106 wasnt a series 1 rallye. Still neat though. Only managed an awful potato pic though.
